How to Simplify Your Style and Love Your Closet Again

What Is a Capsule Wardrobe?

Imagine opening your wardrobe and feeling calm, inspired, and ready — every single morning.
No stress. No chaos. Just pieces that fit, flatter, and make you feel confident.

That’s the beauty of a capsule wardrobe — a small, intentional collection of clothing that works for your real life.

The term capsule wardrobe was first coined in the 1970s by Susie Faux, a London boutique owner, who believed in building a compact wardrobe of high-quality pieces that could be worn interchangeably.

Today, the concept remains timeless — but with a modern, French-inspired twist: fewer pieces, higher quality, endless combinations, and a touch of je ne sais quoi.

Why the Capsule Wardrobe Works

The capsule wardrobe isn’t about restriction — it’s about freedom.

It helps you:

  • Save time each morning (no more “I have nothing to wear!”)

  • Spend less money on impulse buys

  • Reduce clutter and decision fatigue

  • Define your personal style

  • Dress with clarity and confidence

And when done right, it feels empowering — like your wardrobe finally reflects you.

The 30-Piece Capsule Formula

Your capsule can be flexible — adapt it to your lifestyle, climate, and personal aesthetic — but as a starting framework, try this:

10 Tops:

  • Blouses, tees, or sweaters (2–3 per bottom piece).

👖 5 Bottoms:

  • Two skirts, two jeans, one pair of tailored pants.

👗 5 Dresses:

  • Casual day dresses + 1 or 2 special occasion options.

🧥 3 Outerwear:

  • A blazer, trench coat, and seasonal coat/jacket.

👜 3 Bags:

  • One structured day bag, one smaller crossbody, one evening bag.

👠 4 Pairs of Shoes:

  • Heels, sneakers, flats, and boots (or wedges).

✨ Total = 30 essential pieces that cover every occasion.

(Sportswear, underwear, loungewear, and pajamas aren’t counted.)

Step-by-Step — How to Build Your Capsule Wardrobe

Step 1: Understand Your Style

Start with your favorites.
Pull out six items you love and wear often — two tops, two bottoms, two dresses.

Ask yourself:

  • What do they have in common?

  • Why do I love wearing them?

  • How do they make me feel?

Write down recurring themes — colors, fabrics, silhouettes.
This becomes your Style DNA.

Then, do the opposite:
Choose six items you regret buying.
Note why — wrong color? poor fit? too trendy?

These insights will guide what to keep, buy, and avoid.

💡 Use your free printable checklist to jot this down as you go.

👖 Step 2: Edit and Sort

Take everything out of your wardrobe — yes, everything.
Then sort into 4 categories:

1️⃣ Love it — Keep:
Pieces that fit, flatter, and make you feel great.

2️⃣ Out of Season:
Keep for later, but store neatly elsewhere.

3️⃣ No, Thank You:
Clothes you never wear, don’t love, or that don’t fit your life. Donate or sell.

4️⃣ Maybe:
Items you’re emotionally attached to — store in a “pause box” for 30 days.

This step alone can feel liberating — you’ll rediscover forgotten favorites and see what truly deserves space in your life.

Step 3: Create Your Color Palette

A balanced palette ensures everything mixes beautifully.

Choose:

  • 3–4 Base tones: e.g., navy, black, beige, white.

  • 1–3 Neutrals: e.g., camel, cream, grey.

  • 2–3 Accent colors: e.g., blush, olive, denim blue.

Your palette should:

  • Flatter your skin tone

  • Match your daily lifestyle

  • Reflect your personal mood

Bonus tip: Look at your favorite outfit photos — you’ll quickly see your natural palette appear.

Step 4: Evaluate and Adjust

Look at what’s left in your wardrobe — do the numbers balance out?
Are you heavy on tops but light on bottoms? Do your colors align?

Use your checklist to identify gaps:

  • Do you need better basics?

  • Are you missing transitional pieces (like a lightweight blazer)?

  • What can be tailored or upcycled instead of replaced?

This step transforms your closet from random to intentional.

👠 Step 5: Create Outfits

Here comes the fun part — combining your 30 pieces into outfits.

Use an outfit planner to build combinations for each activity:

  • Work

  • Casual days

  • Evenings out

  • Travel

You’ll quickly see dozens of new looks without buying a single thing.

💌 Step 6: Plan for Special Occasions

Life isn’t always predictable — weddings, trips, dinners happen.
Keep 1–2 “extra” outfits on standby for these moments.

Store them separately so your capsule stays clean and clutter-free.

Why You’ll Love This Method

By the end of this process, you’ll have:
✅ A wardrobe filled only with pieces that fit and flatter
✅ Fewer decisions to make each morning
✅ More confidence in your personal style
✅ A new sense of calm and control

A curated closet isn’t about restriction — it’s about joy, freedom, and rediscovering your true style.

Amazing shopping experience!
My daughter and I just got back from an fabulous shopping tour with Linda. The experience was fabulous from start to finish. Linda communicated with me via email and WhatsApp and she asked lots of questions about both me and my daughter’s style and our shopping needs and wants. She went above and beyond to help make the experience amazing. She took us to stores where she had hand picked items for both of us. Shopping in Paris can be overwhelming especially with a picky teen, but Linda really delivered. She also gave us great shopping recommendations for the rest of our day. Highly recommend her services!!!!

Incredible afternoon with a true local fashion expert
Our afternoon with Linda was absolutely fantastic, and one we’ll never forget! We all (daughters 11, 14, and myself) found special items we are so excited about, and never would’ve found the fantastic clothes or brands she pointed out to us if it weren’t for her. She gave us advice on what worked and what didn’t, helped bridge the language barrier, and made 3 hours fly by. I would (hopefully will!) do it again in a heartbeat!!

Incredible afternoon with a true local fashion expert
Linda hosted a Fashionista Experience for me, my 13YO and our 22YO friend. She has the best personality and style ideas. Her kindness and professionalism with my family and with store personnel was so very impressive as was her rapport with the saleswomen in the stores. Of our 10 days in Paris, this was one of our favorite outings and so different than anything else we did. No pressure to buy and such an in-depth knowledge of the area. When we ran out of time, she walked us by all the other places she didn't want us to miss. What a gem. Book her while you can.

A fabulous shopping spree!
My favorite part was our guide, Linda! she was so kind and professional. She worked so well with both my granddaughters. They thought she was terrific. She understood their existing styles and preferences but then added tips and encouragement to update their current looks. Going shopping with Linda was my granddaughter's favorite part of the trip!

Outstanding experience for a teen!
Linda was superb: extremely organized and had clothes prepared in advance. And she gets along great with teenage girls—what else can you ask for? Thank you Linda!

The Perfect Experience!
Linda asked many questions during the booking concerning budget, style, sizes, interest. It maximized our time together and led to some marvelous new and vintage finds. It was so much fun, too! Highly recommended experience for mother/daughter combo.
